Dan is a charming but reckless young poet who falls in love with Candy, a beautiful young student. Hooked as much on heroin as one another, they pay a visit to Casper (a professor of chemistry) to borrow money to support their addiction. Even though Casper is a user himself (eventually making and sharing his own drugs), he gives them a word of advice: “When you can stop, you don’t want to. When you want to stop…you can’t.”
