Planes land on the eight foot thick ice of the gigantic Ross Sea -- which would cover the state of Texas. This is the same area in 1915 that explorer Sir Ernest Henry Shackleton lost his ship, the Endurance, which was trapped in packed ice and slowly crushed before his crew could make shore. There followed an extraordinary series of exploits of the men who were determined to survive (an escape with no lives lost) that would eventually produce Shackleton's heroic status.
